No pressure, no diamonds. This term perfectly encompasses how Ara Gozum a valued artisan jeweller went from working part time next to his mentor in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey, to his own studio in Richmond Hill, Canada, where he is today. Ara Gozum, an Armenian born in Istanbul, Turkey in May of 1957. At the young age of 7, Ara’s cousins started bringing him to their family owned and operated store on the weekends in The Grand Bazaar, The Grand Bazaar is said to being one of the first indoor shopping malls of our world, which opened in the 15th century.
He started out by just watching, doing small tasks like sweeping up and getting tea for his elders. An eager to learn young Ara quickly put the broom down and picking up the trade. At age 12 he started working full time as an apprentice in various shops of The Grand Bazaar, it wasn’t until he started working with a mentor that saw a true talent in Ara and trusted him enough to let him do actual jeweller work that he really got the experience. His first mentor made him do mundane tasks and get tea. It took a keen eye to see the quality Ara Gozum had in him. In as little as two years, because his mentor saw he could handle it, started leaving the store and Ara Gozum was single handedly running the store in the Grand Bazaar. He started with diamond setting; where the stones are set very close to each another with minimal gaps in between, creating a surface of solid sparkle. Some jewellers only do certain stages of making a ring, but because of how young of an age he was exposed to the trade and the passion he had for the art he went on to learn most of the stages and techniques by age 15 working full time.
Now at age 20, Ara G, had an invaluable skill in his hands literally. His trade and experience allowed him to go anywhere, creating masterpieces from precious metals and stones. He travelled around Europe for a year, then returned back to Istanbul in 1976 where he met his now wife, Betty Gozum. They later got married in 1982 and Ara soon immigrated to Canada, it was at this point where Ara planned to make his mark with his learnings from The Grand Bazaar. He started working in downtown Toronto, alongside his life partner Betty Gozum in a jewellery factory building for 4 years, he later opened his first independent studio in 1982 under the name of Gozum Jewellery, he worked out of his downtown studio for 19 years manufacturing wholesale jewellery. His passion and want for unleashing his creativity led him to move both his studio and direction of his craft to custom jewellery pieces to Richmond Hill. Ara G is releasing his newest collection in 2018 and after most of his career being conducted offline, Ara G's pieces are now available internationally for custom order and is also booking private in studio consultations for custom jewellery, engagement rings, pendants, earrings and what ever you can imagine, Ara G can create.
